We welcome Court Sketcher for the public hearing ‘Why Did The K Foundation Burn A Million Quid?’, Hugh Roberts as our guest artist. He shares the remaining works from his visual interpretation of the famed event held at The Black-E, Liverpool on 23rd August, 2017 that saw Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty end their 23 year moratorium where they had vowed not to discuss the burning of the money.

Why Did The K Foundation Burn A Million Quid? The Court Sketchings by Hugh Roberts
Words: WTTDA | Sketchings: Hugh Roberts
Signing up for ‘Welcome To The Dark Ages’ made ticket holders mandatory ‘volunteers’ for the three day event. No description as to what this involved was relayed, in advance, to those attending…
On arrival at The Dead Perch, where tickets were exchanged for wrist bands, all attendees were presented with a choice…
As a creative individual, Hugh opted for number ‘7’ – ‘Can you draw?’ Exactly what this would entail was still unclear…
On Wed, 23rd August, The 400 volunteers gathered at Constellations, Liverpool to discover what their jobs would be…
It was at this point, that a Court Sketcher was allocated and Hugh became the one and only recipient of this role…
Hugh’s skills were required that evening! No pressure then!
Well – maybe some…
Hugh tells us that he was ‘freaking out at the prospect of being the only “court sketcher”‘ and that ‘it seemed like every single person who had nominated themselves as able to draw came and told me personally how they wished it was them lol’.
So, to The Black-E. Check out Hugh in action…
And here are the fruits of charcoal, a wonderful creative mind and inspiration from The K Foundation…
Plus a little work in progress version…
As well as some black & white creativity…
Annebella Pollen stormed the hearing with her presentation that aligned similarities between the Kibbo Kift and the K Foundation. The image below sparked some inspiration…
Which was re-imagined by Hugh…
Last but certainly not least…
Like many reports of ‘the situation’ since, Hugh informs us that he ‘thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience’ and that he is ‘still riding the creative boost that last month gave me which seems to be the legacy the “dark ages” has left me with!’
Many have wondered if any of Hugh’s work ended up being published in the press…
At this stage, it appears that the media have not taken advantage of reporting on the event with these fine charcoal sketches. But in some ways, perhaps that is apt…
The original burning of the money was hardly reported on at the time. But in the years that have followed, the event has grown in discussion, significance, relevance and importance. These artistic works by Hugh Roberts deserve a place in our media…

The following day at The Bombed Out Church, it became apparent that Hugh had gained a very special fan of his work…
Mr Jimmy Cauty, liked the Kibbo Kift reinterpretation so much that he got it put up inside The Ice Kream Van!
